Following the government’s announcement on Tuesday 7 December, face masks are now mandatory in theatres.

While they never went out of fashion at the Abbey Theatre, it is now a requirement that all adults wear face masks throughout their visit, unless they are exempt or actually eating or drinking.

Earlier this year, the theatre also changed its ventilation system to operate entirely on air drawn in from outside rather than using partly recirculated air. This means that during the winter months, the auditorium may feel a little cooler.

Theatre Manager, Tina Swain, says: ‘Audience members may notice the flow of air more on their next visit. We apologise for any inconvenience, but we’re sure most people will agree that wearing a warmer top or keeping your scarf handy is a small concession to ensure theatres like ours can remain open. We want to welcome families for a long-overdue treat this December, so we’re maximising measures to keep everyone as safe as possible.’

The Abbey Theatre has also taken the decision to retain some social distancing in the auditorium for the first few productions in 2022. Staje in Concert, After Electra and One Man, Two Guvnors will all have one seat blocked from sale between each booking. The theatre will keep this measure under regular review.
